PhD from the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC). 2022/2023 scholarships for young Africans

Application deadline: July 31, 2022

Applications are invited from qualified and motivated applicants for a PhD program in the field of Economics. This programme, supported by the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), combines the traditional doctoral structure at the School of Economic and Finance (SEF) and a partnership with other universities in Africa. It offers rigorous and competitive training leading to a PhD in Economics at the University of the Witwatersrand.

During the program, candidates will have the opportunity to learn collaboratively with students from other degree-granting universities in Africa, both on our campus and in a joint facility for elective courses in Nairobi, Kenya. The program spans four years and includes training in core subjects, electives, thesis proposal, fieldwork, and thesis preparation and defense. Students will spend time at the University of Cape Town and Nairobi, Kenya for coursework and then at WITS for their thesis.

A limited number of full scholarships will be offered competitively to applicants from the Sub-Saharan Africa region. Applicants from the SADC region are therefore encouraged to apply.
