Cooperation in economic development leads to better resilience

The Federal Council

Bern, 26.01.2022 – On January 26, the Federal Council adopted the Foreign Economic Policy Report 2021. Its key chapter shows how Switzerland’s efforts in economic development cooperation contribute to greater sustainability and the resilience to crises, and contribute to limiting the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Foreign Economic Policy Report 2021 provides an overview of the development of Switzerland’s foreign economic policy during the year under review. The key chapter of the report focuses on the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic for developing and newly industrialized countries, where, in addition to its impact on health and society, the pandemic has had severe effects on local economies. The pandemic has accentuated existing structural problems and increased the pressure on public finances as well as the need for reform and financing. Economic recovery goes hand in hand with the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. The situation in developing and newly industrialized countries remains tense; jobs are lost and poverty increases.

This crisis will not be over for Switzerland either until it is brought under control globally. For Switzerland, it is important that partner countries such as South Africa or Colombia recover as quickly as possible. In addition to the fight against the crisis, however, opportunities must be seized in view of the sustainability objectives of the 2030 Agenda. Switzerland’s activities in the field of economic development cooperation, as well as the efforts of its bilateral and multilateral partners and other federal agencies also contribute to the achievement of these objectives. By promoting sound economic policy frameworks and innovative initiatives in the private sector of its partner countries, Switzerland can contribute to strengthening their resilience in times of crisis.
