We Should Welcome Cross Border Raids

26 Oct 2006

A version of this letter from Tom Miers was published in The Scotsman on 26th October

Sir,

Only in Scotland would the prospect of a hospital attracting new patients be greeted with dismay (Scots hospitals hit by influx from England, Scotsman 24th October). Elsewhere in Europe hospitals are rewarded the more patients they treat. As a result they compete to attract as many as possible by offering the cleanest, swiftest and most comfortable treatment they can. Even old England has started down this route. The SNP’s Christine Graham MSP and her colleagues often look abroad for inspiration for ideas on the economy. Perhaps she should visit Sweden, Denmark, Belgium or Holland to see how to eradicate waiting lists and MRSA.
